Cool Escapes

The heat is on…again

Heat waves in Portland may not be going anywhere, but we can help you cool down. A little Googling will get you all the classics – McMenamin’s Kennedy School, Broughton Beach, etc. – but let us rip off the bandaid for you: they’re packed. Just crawling with hot, sweaty families flocking to our tried-and-true summer haunts. Don’t you wish you could go somewhere cool, refreshing, and…not packed?

Whether you’re solo, honeymooning, or one of those aforementioned hot, sweaty families, we’ve gathered up a few local favorites to help you beat the heat.

By the way, both Jupiter Original and the Next have air conditioned rooms. Just thought you’d want to know, in case you want to…

10 Barrel Brewing

Come for the beer, stay for the vibe. Just across town in the Pearl neighborhood, you can’t go wrong with cold beer on a hot afternoon. Wait out the sun with a few friends, or make some new ones; 10 Barrel welcomes meetups and watch parties from all corners and cultures of the city.

Noble Rot

Noble Rot isn't just a catchy name; it's where you'll find a killer wine selection and views you could make Wes Anderson memes out of. Whether you're a wine snob or just really good at pretending, this place is a summer jackpot. (And yes, they have air conditioning!)

Noble Rot

1111 East Burnside Street, Fourth Floor, Portland, OR 97214 (a 3-minute walk from Jupiter!)

Rooster Rock Nude Beach

A 30-minute drive east out of the city will earn you some breathtaking views. Stop just short of Bridal Veil Falls and you’re at Rooster Rock, a park along the Columbia River overlooking beautiful Sand Island. If you really want to let it all hang out, visit the clothing-optional side of the beach; bring plenty of sunscreen and tan yourself to perfection. You won’t get that at McMenamin’s.

Hey Love

We can’t not shout out our own - especially when it’s our award-winning champion of the season! For the uninitiated, Hey Love is a year-round taste of summer, with crisp cocktails, fresh bites, and a tropical midcentury aesthetic you’ll want to spend the whole day lounging in. And! It won the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation’s honor of “Best US Hotel Bar” in the 2023 Spirited Awards®, so if you’re thirsty for a really, really good cocktail on a hot day, congratulations; you’ve found them.
